How to Choose a Large Dining Room Table: A Guide to Getting It Right

The dining table is the most consequential furniture purchase in most homes. Unlike a side table or even a sofa - which can be moved, covered, or quietly replaced - a large dining room table defines the room it sits in. It determines flow, dictates lighting, shapes conversation, and ultimately becomes the surface around which the most important moments of domestic life happen. It deserves careful thought.

At Time & Tide, our furniture selection always begins with the question of longevity: will this piece still feel right in ten years? With dining tables, that question is particularly important. A well-made large dining table, chosen thoughtfully, is a piece you should never need to replace.

Step One: Get the Size Right

The most common mistake when buying a large dining room table is buying one that's too large for the room. The ideal clearance around a dining table is 90cm - enough for chairs to be pushed back fully and for someone to comfortably walk behind a seated guest. Measure your room and subtract that clearance on all sides. The resulting rectangle is the maximum footprint your table should occupy.

Standard dining table dimensions:

6-seater: approximately 150–180cm long, 85–95cm wide

8-seater: approximately 200–220cm long, 90–100cm wide

10-seater: approximately 240–280cm long, 100–110cm wide

If you regularly host large gatherings but don't have space for a permanently extended table, consider a table with a butterfly leaf extension - it gives you a compact everyday option and a large entertaining configuration when needed.

Step Two: Choose Your Material

Solid Wood

The classic choice for a large dining table, and with good reason. Solid oak, walnut, and mango wood are warm, tactile, and improve with age. Oak in particular develops a beautiful patina over time. Solid wood tables will mark and scratch - this is part of their character, not a flaw. Use coasters and placemats for hot items, and treat the surface occasionally with appropriate oil or wax to maintain condition.

Marble & Stone

Marble dining tables are striking and cool to the touch, creating a sense of elegance that wood doesn't quite replicate. They're also practical in some ways - easy to wipe clean and heat-resistant. The trade-off is weight (marble tables are significantly heavier and harder to move), and a requirement for regular sealing to prevent staining from acidic foods and drinks.

Metal & Mixed Materials

Metal-framed tables - particularly those combining steel or cast iron legs with wood, glass, or marble tops - offer a contemporary, industrial-influenced aesthetic. They're sturdy, wear well, and tend to be visually lighter than solid wood forms, making them a good option in rooms where you want the table to feel less dominant.

Step Three: Think About Seating

A large dining table without the right chairs around it looks incomplete at best, incongruous at worst. When choosing chairs, consider:

Height: The standard seat height of 45cm works with most dining tables at 74–77cm high. Always check the combination before buying.

Style: Chairs don't have to match perfectly - a mix of dining chairs and occasional chairs at the heads of the table creates a relaxed, eclectic look that works well in most contemporary interiors.

Comfort: For longer dinner parties, padded seats or upholstered chairs make a real difference. Open-back chairs feel more airy around a large table.

Number: Leave space for one more chair than you expect to use regularly - dining tables always expand into the space available for guests.

Step Four: Style the Table

A large dining table is itself a canvas. Between meals, it benefits from simple styling — a cluster of candlesticks at different heights, a ceramic vase with seasonal stems, a sculptural fruit bowl. The goal is to make it look considered when empty, and to have those decorative elements clear in a moment when it's time to lay the table properly.

Lighting above the table should hang at 70–80cm above the surface — close enough to feel intimate, high enough not to obstruct sightlines. A statement chandelier or pendant cluster above a large dining table is one of the most transformative interior choices you can make.
